Blaenau Ffestiniog: Slate Town and Railway Terminus

The slate town

Blaenau Ffestiniog is the northern end of the Ffestiniog Railway, which runs for 13.5 miles from Porthmadog. The line is run by a company that also operates the Welsh Highland Railway, and the two together have carried up to 400,000 passengers a year.

A different kind of day out

A slate quarry may seem an odd place for a peaceful afternoon, but the archive suggested a wander around one as a rewarding and unusual experience, and a chance to see the area’s industrial past.

Tanygrisiau

This village is a stop on the railway, on the southern side of the Moelwyn mountains. It makes a good place to break the journey and walk.
