Llanfachreth: A Quiet Village Above Dolgellau

The village

Llanfachreth lies about three miles north of Dolgellau and is the starting point for some of the best short walks in the district. The Nannau estate lies close by.

The Precipice Walk

A circuit with sweeping views over the Mawddach river and the mountains beyond. The path starts from the car park, and the climb to the viewpoint takes around thirty to forty minutes for the short distance of under a mile.

Nannau estate features

  • An archway known as Y Garreg Fawr, “The Great Stone”, once marked the entrance to the Nannau estate.
  • Pwll y Gele, Welsh for “Pool of the Leeches”, is a lake of six acres.
  • The current Georgian house was begun around 1788 by Sir Robert Howell Vaughan.
